Cape Town’s ageing cooling towers were widely regarded as an eyesore sandwiched between residential suburbs in the pristine landscape. Their demolition kickstarted our campaign.

With the demolition fresh in consumers’ minds, we designed a highly portable inflatable replica of the cooling towers, which could be easily popped up all around Cape Town; in-between homes and buildings, playgrounds and places of pristine beauty.

Inside, Capetonians were presented with a manned information booth, interactive display panels and printed collateral, which delivered practical electricity saving tips to save money and the environment.

Unsustainable is ugly.

Cape Town is one of the most naturally beautiful cities in the world. We continued to leverage the demolition of the unsightly cooling towers and the blemish they represented on the pristine skyline, equating it to the old way of consumer electricity.

And saving is simple.

We delivered tips to save money by saving electricity, beyond the inflatable cooling tower. The tips were strategically divided into no cost, low cost and ‘invest to save’ to cater for price sensitive audiences.

An icon to anchor it all.

For an issue as important as saving electricity, we were surprised to not find anything of its kind in use. So we created SAVE and licensed it on Creative Commons for everyone. It was the icon that anchored our entire campaign.

Results.

There was a reduction of 17% in electricity consumption in 1 year and, while we cannot claim that this was all because of our work for the City, the message reached almost all of Cape Town’s 4.1 million residents. 

Due to its success, the City extended and ran the campaign for 5 years.

Our inflatable cooling tower is now being used by Greenpeace in Europe.
